In recognition of her historic achievement, Pratima Rai, a student of St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling, who successfully climbed Mount Everest, will be honoured in a joint initiative by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

The decision was made during an important meeting held today at the GTA Mini Secretariat in Gidde Pahar. GTA Chief Executive Anit Thapa met with Brigadier Mukesh Gurung, NCC’s North Bengal head, to discuss plans for celebrating Pratima’s inspiring feat.

Both parties agreed that her successful ascent of the world’s tallest peak on May 19, 2025, deserves public recognition. As part of a 10-member NCC team, Pratima scaled the 8,848.86-meter summit, marking NCC’s third successful Everest mission.

Speaking about the event, Anit Thapa highlighted the significance of Pratima’s achievement for the youth and the hill community. “Pratima’s success is a symbol of the resilience and spirit of our people. It proves that even in challenging conditions, our youth can rise and shine,” he said.

Brigadier Gurung echoed this sentiment, adding, “Pratima embodies the NCC values of courage, perseverance, and teamwork. We are proud to join hands with GTA to celebrate her journey and motivate other young cadets to aim high.”

A grand felicitation ceremony is being planned to honour Pratima Rai and to showcase her accomplishment as a source of inspiration for aspiring youth across the region.
