Gill-led Team India Departs for England with Eyes on Historic England vs India Test Series Win

Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team has departed from Mumbai for a crucial five-match England vs India Test series in England, marking the beginning of their campaign in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Mumbai | June 6, 2025

The highly anticipated series will begin on June 20, with matches scheduled at some of England’s most iconic venues — Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord’s and The Oval (London), and Old Trafford (Manchester). India is determined to end their 18-year long wait for a Test series victory in England, having last won there in 2007. Their most recent tour in 2021 ended in a 2-2 draw.

This will also be India’s first Test series since senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from red-ball cricket last month, making way for a new era led by young skipper Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant.

Several members of the Test squad are already in England, featuring in India A’s three-match warm-up series against England Lions. The opening unofficial Test ended in a draw, highlighted by a stunning double century from comeback man Karun Nair. The second warm-up match begins today (June 6) at the County Ground in Northampton.
