Kalimpong Khabar News 24 May. In a historic move marking a new chapter in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill was officially appointed as the captain of India’s Test team on Saturday. The announcement, made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, signals a generational shift following the recent retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format of the game.

The 25-year-old Gill, widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in world cricket, will lead the side in the upcoming five-match Test series against England starting June 20. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced New Delhi, unveiling a revamped squad aimed at shaping the future of Indian red-ball cricket.

Gill’s elevation to captaincy is seen as a natural progression, given his leadership stints with the Indian T20I side and his role as skipper of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his guidance, the Gujarat Titans have flourished, currently topping the IPL points table. His calm demeanor, tactical acumen, and maturity have drawn praise from both teammates and cricketing experts alike.

Since making his Test debut during the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gill has featured in 32 Tests, amassing 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, including five centuries. He is expected to form the cornerstone of India’s new generation of Test cricketers, alongside rising stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant.

With this appointment, the Indian team embarks on a fresh journey under Gill’s leadership, aiming to maintain its stronghold in world cricket while nurturing the next wave of talent.
